Peter Heeschen and Toku

Peter visited Todd Johnson’s workshop in South Carolina in the fall of 2005 while Toku was working with the young American carver. A friend of Toku’s, Peter has never before consciously tried to adopt any of Toku’s ideas into his own work. But a couple of new pipe-shapes emerging from Peter’s workshop this winter suggest that Peter’s imagination hasn’t been immune to Toku’s influence.

Two (Toku-ish) Freehand Acorns, by Peter Heeschen

UPPER: Grade A   LOWER:  Grade B

The Grade A (below) is a small but elegant pipe, with simple lines and a rich, handsome stain. Though it has a flat bottom, it does not sit (unless you stick a marble in the bowl as I have for these photos):

The Grade B (below) reminds me of a large Conck-like shape Peter has worked with from time to time, but this version has an organic, fecund bulbousness in shank and bowl that sets it apart from Heeschens I've seen before.
