MANTA PORTRAITS 2: Toku's First Hiro

Manta with Ivory, Hiro, SPC 349 (2005)

For the Chicago show, in 2005, Toku created a massive new Manta, with a thick shank-end of ivory and an ivory stem.  I believe this was his first Hiro grade pipe.  It was certainly the largest pipe he had made up to that time ... and was an augur of many future developments.  Toku's imagination had begun to explore the creative possibilities in larger chunks of briar.

Though twice as massive as the 3-snail Manta, Toku made subtle changes to the flaring "fins" so that now, they fit easily within the fingers ... and, indeed, notwithstanding its bulk, the entire pipe fits the hand with surprising comfort - though I do feel that I'm holding "a fistful of briar" between my fingers.
